Two Morris County men finished one-two at the Midland

Steve Lewandowski of Mountain Lakes edge out Aaron Leskow of Morristown,
4:18.50 to 4:18.94 to win the state road mile championship.
On the women’s side, Emily Rosario of Brooklyn, running
for the Garden State Track Club won her race in 5:06.87. No Morris County women were in the top ten
overall, but Nora Cary of Morristown was age graded second with an 92.55% PLP
for her 6:26.30 mile at age 63. Only
Erica Campbell of Ridgewood scored higher at 92.75% for her 7:04.10 at age 69.
Top performing local men included Peter Kashulines of
Mountain Lakes who won the won the M55 division with his 4:56.82 and topped the
age graded division at 89.28%. Joel
Garrell of Morristown was first overall in the M60 division. Mark Williams of Columbia demonstrated his
track speed with his 4:41.90 win in the M45 division. Stuart Haynes of Chatham placed third in the
M40 division with a time of 4:45.41.
Long Distance Running chair Ed Neighbour of Sparta was
pleased with the turnout for the mile race that has grown from 467 finishers in
2016 to a perfect one hundred more in 2018.
“The enthusiasm for the mile has grown,” said
Neighbour. “Plus it didn’t hurt that the
temperature was in the 70’s and a perfect night for racing.”
Much of the field was made up with USATF teams with the
top four open men’s teams from the Garden State club. Fifth was taken by the Freedom Running Club
with the Morris area Garmin Runners placing seventh.
Clubs with strong masters teams did better in the age
divisions with a very tight race in the Men 40 group. Garden State finished with a combined total
time of 24:20 with the Garmin team finishing in 24:23.
There was no contest in the M50 with Kashulines leading
in his Garmin team for first place and four minutes faster than the second
place Clifton squad.
The Garmin M60 squad placed second to the Shore AC with
the Randolph based Geezers taking fourth out of eleven teams in the division.
Like their open men, the Garden State club dominated on
the open women’s side with the top two places taken by the club while the
Garmin women took third.
The Clifton Running Club’s women took first in the W40
division with the Garmin women second.
Ditto for the W50 division but with the North Jersey Masters lead in by
Cary in third place. The Morris County Striders
women placed second to the North Jersey team in the W60 division and with a
full turnout the club put two W70 teams on the line and one W80.
All the clubs are racing this morning at the cross
country 5 kilometer championship race at Natirar in Peapack Gladstone. A good turnout is expected and should match
2017’s 268 finishers.
SHORE AC MEDALS IN NATIONAL MASTERS 5K
The Shore Athletic Club’s M60 team medal at the National
Masters 5K championship in Atlanta this past Sunday. Reno Stirrat of Rockaway
lead in this team with a time of 19:25 to place third out of seven teams. With out enough men for a 70’s team or enough
for a B team in the 60’s the club put together an M50 team using one 50 plus,
one 70 plus and one 65 plus. That team
actually placed sixth out of seven teams keeping the team in contention in the
season long grand prix.
